The Arab Spring is about people and their need for change and democracy but it is also about disruptive elements like the Al Qaeda seeking opportunities. For example something that pertains to live entertainment (such as circus, dance, religious rites, live music). The obsession everyone has with dissecting video game and movie/celebrity addictions has started to tire me out. It would be great to see this subject put it's attention on more positive side of entertainment, and maybe that way more positive things will come out of it. For example, I'm very curious as to whether story telling, while entertaining, also serves to create and stimulate new ideas in the listener, giving them better tactics to deal with life and help create new, previously unknown emotions in the listener. Or can watching an amazing dancer inspire one to exercise and dance themselves, creating better body awareness and better overall health. Is being transported to a different reality really mindless, or does it provide one with tools of creativity that will help them be more flexible and more innovative. Of course, the mindless entertainment of video games and Hollywood aren't providing this, but if we start to emphasize and improve the entertainment that does, wouldn't that bring us farther?

Comment provided April 03, 2011 at 18:04 pm

Reply - SR
Nikki - I am very pleased that you thought along these lines. Of course, that is what I have tried to emphasize and focused on the personal forms of entertainment as in story telling, playing with a child, listening to music for instance, these are very personal. In fact the personal forms of entertainment are more important to us than the more public forms of entertainment like movies. I wouldn't call Hollywood entertainment mindless, but that is only one type of entertainment which may not have the same impact as the more personal types of entertainment. So of course we need to broaden our horizons when we do our research on entertainment and create a comprehensive psychology of entertainment. This is a more developing field as you see.

Aishwarya writes:
Subject: article

it is a fantastic article on advertisement in psychological aspect and it covers up all the information about advertisement in psychological aspect.

Comment provided April 09, 2011 at 06:45 am

Reply - SR
Aishwarya - Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you found the article helpful. The Arab world is changing - there is a definite Arab revolution in the Middle East and Northern Africa as all authoritarian regimes are facing direct and strong opposition from the people. The Arab people are reacting to the difference between the world out there and the rigid conditions in their own home country. Open and easy access to information, increasing connectivity and awareness on human rights and democracy issues are clearly making the Arab world hungry for change.

I will soon write an article on this and will post an update here.

Homosexuality

I was going through some internet articles on homosexuality and most of them are so appallingly wrong and misleading and homosexuals are so frequently branded as harmful to society. Reflections in Psychology parts I&II are going through formatting before going up on Amazon in 6-8 weeks. The essays are in any case available free on the archives of widernet. I'll put up the link once I get it. I'm busy with two books I'm doing and will be doing minimal column or article writing in the next 3 months. A book on conflicts will have release/promotion in 2011. There is also an illustrated book, again for 2011. I know there is a lot of panic as these articles were driving a lot of traffic and had high google page ranks and now these links are broken, but I can't do anything about it. I'm planning to pull down some more articles although at least one copy will still remain online for a while. This is because when I started writing these psychology essays, there were few or no essays on the topics chosen and I was trying to provide new insights. Now there are so many that it is difficult to distinguish articles with any real content. From the Psychology of bathing your wife to the Psychology of feeding your dog, there are all kinds of dross out there. Although of course, like everything else some are well written. I'm planning to shift all psychology articles to my website and it's a lot of work actually and will take time.
Sorry again that you may find some links broken. Of course Israel lost patience as Hamas has been provoking Israel with repeated rocket attacks and Israel has a right to defend its people. Yet such aggressive move by Israel has only turned the world against it and the people of Gaza who were almost turning away from Hamas may now be uniting just to fight Israel. Hamas' repeated rocket and mortar attacks against Israel could have been dealt with differently instead of such aggressive bombing. The attacks are also not well planned as instead of weapons facilities, the police stations and schools in Gaza are becoming targets. This could be a major diplomatic failure for Israel. Of course Israel is not required to remain silent but this is obviously not the only way.
I'll post links to my articles soon.

Asexuality- Ok let me answer

You see there have been many letters and comments sent to me and people suggested that they can have sex and still be asexual or they can masturbate and still be asexual simply because according to the definition of psychology 'they are not sexually attracted to anyone'. This is like having your cake and eating it too! You can't call yourself an asexual (and I know many people simply like to project themselves as asexuals because it's different)and still have a sex life. I never said asexuals necessarily have brain damage. I completely endorse and support asexuality and feel that we should simply understand it better. But brain problems could physiologically lead to asexuality. My problem is with the definition of asexuality. I believe psychologists have to change the definition, asexuality is about 'not having desire of sex and not practising sex' and it is not about 'not being sexually attracted to anyone'. I'm sure many psychologists who think out of the box will agree with me and there are many concepts and definitions in psychology that require a rethink and reevaluation. I'm writing these psychology articles simply to begin a discussion, debate and trigger interests in issues that have not been taken up by psychologists and this can lead to new research directions as well. Doesn't matter whether I'm right or wrong, the important thing is to begin a discussion. You can have your hate campaign against me, I don't understand why you should do it but I'm not too bothered.

Some readers have even written and asked why I post on free articles website - come on, as a writer, my aim is to get more readers..and I'm open minded about all avenues and routes through which I can reach readers

Psychology of Asexuality

There are many new comments on psychology of asexuality, I will discuss them and post the comments by first week of January. Psychology as taught in schools is rather boring and clinical although psychology itself is a very interesting subject. There are many issues in psychology that have never been tackled or discussed - I'm trying to raise / highlight these issues as well.

I do politics - because I tend to feel deeply about the world around me and feel I should speak out about these issues as many of us feel.

I write on philosophy and religion - because I love God (or let's say the power of creation). Finally I'm always in awe as to why and how I am here on this earth and somehow I feel I am indebted to this whole process of creation and want to return something by at least trying to understand the nature of reality and the universe.

Obama continued...

on OPEDNews

Obama's challenges and possible directions

psychology articles..

Students and Researchers - While using my psychology articles for your studies and research, please remember that many of the ideas presented are my own and may not be according to standard psychological theories. As I understand it, the idea goes like this: All people are "naturally" really interested in sex (note that "natural" is unmeasurable and unscientific.) If someone is really interested in sex, it must be because all people are naturally interested in sex. If someone isn't interested in sex (and there are many such people), it must be because they are really interested in sex and are repressing it. This isn't falsifiable and therefore isn't science. Not just that, but it is a form of denial about the obvious fact that some people simply aren't interested in sex.

Saberi: Hello Pretzelboy, thanks for your comment. I agree it is quite difficult to prove asexuality scientifically as we do not have a proper scientific definition of asexuality. As of now, asexuality as 'lack of sexual attraction' is not a very convincing definition. Measuring asexuality is a problem I agree but it is a potential area of research and our first attempts would be to 'define' asexuality. Thanks!

On a different note, one comment from a reader of my poems (Prakash)is that some of my poems are sexual/erotic.
Well Prakash, that's because sexuality is part of our lives and I'm not asexual :-)

latest...

I've added the Problems and Prospects in Africa - Global Politician

Authorsden

There are some great people at Authorsden, so check out their work and profiles:

1. John DeDakis - Senior Editor at CNN has published a novel/suspense story 'FAST TRACK' about the 'psychological' aspects of a car/train crash survivor. The protagonist is a young woman, so this should be considered as a markedly bold project as the author is a man. Here's John's website

2. Read other people's work, they are truly remarkable. Some of the names are Jude Forese, Axilea M.U and Anessa Blaine
Jude's work has great depth, Axilea's is characterized by mystery/intrigue and Anessa Blaine is an unusually sensitive poet.

Psychology of asexuality (more comments)

Ace: Good article. I do disagree on the pathological comments. However I agree the majority of asexuals have some latent or residual sexuality. I label myself nonsexual. I never Mbate, find all sexuality repulsive, am a virgin. I am a good example of a true asexual.

Saberi: Well Ace. Thanks for the comments. If you find sex repulsive it might mean you're repressing something. The reasons for this may be childhood experiences. If you're happy with your life, then fine, otherwise do consult a psychoanalyst.

Rhoda: I'm a low-sexual who has had asexual periods lasting years at a time. I wasn't repressing anything. I struggled and searched for a way to be or at least pass for sexual. I didn't even care much if I mustered up an attraction to men or to women. I just wanted to stop the constant harassment and threats of rape from people who had heard I was "frigid" (a pseudomedical pejorative term for a female asexual). I lived in fear because of gossip. During those times I had sex because society mandates it. It was torture. It left me depressed, confused and clinging to a sense of reality by a thread. When I have stopped I have felt powerful, clear-headed and confident. I just miss being socially accepted, as any woman who has sex will be accepted. If a woman is promiscuous, there is a vast culture of promiscuity that will treat her as "healthy"; she will be popular. If she is married there is a vast culture that will treat her as "stable"; she will be respectable. If she is not having sex at all, there is a vast culture that will treat her as "available". If she is not available, nearly everyone will treat her as "crazy", "witholding" (presumably witholding something that belongs to someone else), and "uptight" (presumably meaning any woman who is no fun must be altered to correct the defect). I am identifying as asexual because it is the shortest answer that comes close to describing my life.
One of the cruellest and most incomprehensible stereotypes of a's I ever heard was that we are "cold" and "don't love anyone". Nothing could be further from the truth. It always seemed to me it was the other way around. It was highly-sexed people who threatened me and attacked me when I first tried to take a stand as someone who had a right not to have sex just to fit in. I still have flashbacks about some of the things men did openly, proud of themselves, with a self-righteous air, to me to punish my speaking up. They thought they were my owners and that I had no right to withold my biological functions from them. I didn't even know some of them. Other people, male and female, have talked down to me, made fun of me and just refused to hear me, pretending I said something else. They seem to be the ones who have trouble being loving. Not all sexuals are unloving, but I think what I've seen tells me the higher-sexed people are by and large the least loving.

Saberi: Hi Rhoda. Thanks for your comments. Well I do agree with some of your points. Especially your categories for defining the sexuality of women. But your views seem to have been shaped by your experiences and your perception of those experiences. Society has in a way given certain importance to sex although it is not an absolute basic need, we can survive without sex. So asexuality should be accepted. Your own condition of asexuality may have been triggered by adverse events in your life and certain portrayals of sex in modern society have become very distasteful and many people are developing this repulsion for sex. So you will find other people like you and there's a community for asexuals. Sometimes we may be highly sexed but simply never realize that we're repressing our sexual desire. If you felt attracted towards anyone, you are not asexual. I don't want to force you to fit in but the fact that you felt threatened by people who tried to have sex with you, shows a certain insecurity. Maybe the fact that you love people is actually a channeling of your sexual energy and it's a good thing. I suggest you use your unrecognized/untapped sexuality for serving humanity, doing some social work or try creative pursuits. If you feel oversexed people are not loving, that may be due to your personal experiences but if you can associate sex with love at some point in your life, your opinions will definitely change. Thanks again!

recently..

I have added The Psychology of Children
and The Psychology of Business

The Psychology of Communication

Comments (psychology of banking)

Stanley - I want to know more about the relationship between psychology, banking and finance.

Saberi - Well, Stanley very few books or articles and research papers have been written on this. There's one recent book on the psychology of relationship banking and there are a few papers on customer loyalty, relationship, brand commitment and so on which you will get in any journal database. We could call it "sexualnormativity" if we wanted. Take for example the relationship between asexuality and autism. Even if some asexuals have maladaptive pathological conditions, it does not mean all do, nor does it mean asexuality is necessarily pathological. The fact that non-pathological asexuality is not well represented in the literature is because almost no one has tried to look for it.

Saberi: Hi Andrew. Thanks for the comments. I did not write asexuality is pathological. It is only not a completely normal condition and can have biological, psychological, social or intellectual causes, that's what I wrote. But as I have pointed out it could be associated with biological or psychological problems, then it could become pathological in a certain way. But asexuality will not be pathological if it has underlying social and intellectual causes. As in case of strictly non-pathological asexuality, it is more a preferred choice of celibacy rather than asexuality. Asexuality could be related to hypoactive sexual desire disorder as such a disorder would have biological or psychological causes. I consider asexuality as 'no desire and no practice of sex'.

Andrew:Asexuality is a lack of sexual attraction (or maybe "little or no sexual attraction.) This may or may not mean "not sexual." Under this definition, there is no reason to exclude people who masturbate from this group. Secondly, all the information that you cite, while I have seen it elsewhere is enormously problematic. At this point, we don't know what causes asexuality. We have virtually no data from probability samples or even convenience samples. Almost all data comes from people seeing therapists, who cannot legitimately be assumed to be representative of asexuals in general.

Saberi: Yeah you see, this is where you and I differ. Asexuality is usually considered as 'lack of sexual attraction'. I believe this is an inadequate definition of asexuality and can only lead to more confusion. How do you measure lack of sexual attraction in psychology? The data that psychologists will obtain in this case can really say nothing about actual asexuality. I also wrote something similar about data on asexuality being extremely problematic. As for the information that I use, most of it has been based on my ideas of asexuality and I don't know how you have seen it elsewhere. According to me asexuality is, 'no desire and no practice of sex' and the whole 'no sexual attraction' definition is inadequate from a psychological viewpoint. Thus, if a person masturbates, it shows that he or she has complete sex drive simply not directed towards anyone and the sex urge is simply latent. It does not mean that the person is asexual. That's my opinion.

recently added....

Corruption and Culture - Part 1 - Global Politician

Corruption and Culture - Part 2 - Global Politician, 3rd March 08.

Psychology of Asexuality - Buzzle

Reader Comments (Psychology of Atheism)

DSAGeorge: "Atheism is largely moving against the establishment, against any form of organized moral culture." - What nonsense! Perhaps to those who live in a fundamentalist society, where children are taught that they must believe in God or burn in Hell, atheism is "against the establishment", but in many societies (including non-communistic ones), people simply don't believe in God for the same reasons they don't believe in other fairy tales. Arguing that atheists "must have had problems with their fathers" is offensive and (frankly) stupid- it would be more likely to be true to argue that those who believe in God do so from an immature need to have a father figure holding their hands at all times- an imaginary one whenever a physical one is not available.

Saberi: Dear DSAGeorge, thank you for your comment. My sentence above is based on the understanding that most societies even today are theistic, we still celebrate Christmas and all religious events. So considering the psychoanalytic basis that atheism is an unconscious desire to resist authority, it is possible that atheism could be broadly understood as largely the need to move against the established and organized moral systems. That doesn’t mean that atheists cannot have their personal morals. Of course they can. As for God being similar to fairy tales, that depends on your definition or understanding of God. To some scientists and even to some theists God can simply be the larger cosmic principle.

Considering your second comment that atheists do not have problems with fathers, well that’s an open issue and as I have indicated I too believe that the Freudian explanation is too limited and generalized. But since father represents God in some way, unlike you I do not consider the link as absolutely stupid. Thanks!

Roger: Buddhism is an atheistic religion and if atheism is all that bad, then Buddhism could be considered as not representing a moral culture?

Saberi: Dear Roger, thank you for your question. I never wrote atheism is bad. Although Buddhism ‘according to many’ is an atheistic religion, I believe Buddhism is completely theistic. Of course that’s another issue. Buddhism does not mention a personal God but that does not mean Buddhism completely denies the impersonal. Buddhism like Advaita Vedanta brings out the moral strength of the individual. Hope this answers your question. Thanks!

Updates..

Poem MuseTrap published in Psychopoetica, 2008.

Link here: http://www.fernhse.demon.co.uk/eastword/psycho/08Roy.htm

added....13th Feb,2008

The Psychology of Atheism on Buzzle

Link here:http://www.buzzle.com/articles/the-psychology-of-atheism.html

Reader Comments

Mark: Could you direct me to any works on the role of the artist in early societies? Maybe a study in anthropology? I'm interested in the unconscious shamanistic significance of art as a practical tool in human endeavour and development. I'm a writer on heritage issues.

Saberi: Hi Mark, thanks for your question. I haven’t done much research on this but have some idea. You might like to go through - David S. Whitley (1998) Cognitive Neuroscience, Shamanism and the Rock Art of Native California. Anthropology of Consciousness 9 (1), 22–37
There is also a very good book I remember and I’m sure you know. Shamanism – The Beginnings of Art by Andreas Lommel. In fact books by Lommel are good. Basically I think you’ll be looking at Tribal Art and Rock Art and Primitive Art in general. Do go through the Anthropology of Consciousness and many of the issues will have related articles. Also, what about Primitive Art by Franz Boas? Interesting area of research. Hope this helps! Cheers.

Dan: In your Psychology of Altruism, you haven’t provided a development perspective on what makes people Altruistic? Is there a Psychological theory of Altruism apart from Maslow’s that you have indicated or one that does not seem to draw on biological/evolutionary perspectives?

Saberi: Hi Dan, thanks for your question. Psychology as of now seems to be heavily dependent on evolutionary perspectives for the explanation of Altruism. Altruism in fact is a topic for evolutionary psychologists. There may be some flaws to this and the perspectives become limited. Psychoanalysis has been rather dismissive towards altruism considering the fact that psychoanalysis is focused on explaining our primal instincts. I would say psychoanalysis is largely self-centered but many modern psychologists after Jung have tried to move away from that position although a proper developmental psychology of altruism needs to be worked on. Good question.
